Disney is facing a copyright lawsuit over Moana 2. The 2024 sequel to the 2016 hit features Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) embarking on a new seafaring adventure with Maui (Dwayne Johnson). Moana 2, a significant box office success, is also a contender for awards like Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. However, Disney is being sued for copyright infringement.

Animator Buck Woodall is seeking $10 billion, alleging similarities between Moana and his screenplay, Bucky, which he claims was shared with Disney's Mandeville Films in 2003. Key similarities include an ancient Polynesian setting, spirits of ancestors as animals, and a demigod supporting character. This is Woodall's second lawsuit related to Moana, following a previous one that was dismissed. As the legal battle develops, it may impact future franchise developments and adaptations, including a planned live-action remake.
Despite legal challenges, Disney may explore ways to continue the franchise, potentially involving Woodall in future productions. Additionally, the film's award season performance has faced challenges, with few major nominations, potentially affecting its Oscar prospects.
