Asteroid 2024 YR4, discovered recently, has presented a 3.1% chance of impacting Earth by December 22, 2032, according to NASA, marking the highest impact probability for such an object in modern forecasts. Despite these odds, experts assert that humanity has viable strategies to prevent a potentially destructive collision.

Richard Moissl from the European Space Agency calms concerns, stating that as data on YR4 accumulates, the probability of a direct hit on Earth is likely to decrease. However, even if it were to rise to 100%, humanity is equipped with multiple options for defense.


Strategies for Defending the Planet


Spacecraft Collision: NASA's successful 2022 Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) showcased the potential to alter an asteroid’s trajectory by smashing a spacecraft into it. This tactic might be employed against YR4 with multiple consecutive impacts, although care must be taken not to create hazardous debris.


Gravity Tractor and Ion Beam: Innovations such as the gravity tractor—a spacecraft influencing the asteroid’s path through gravitational attraction—and ion beam application, which would move the asteroid away using ion thrust, represent non-destructive intervention methods.


Painting the Asteroid: Another creative approach involves altering the asteroid’s surface reflectivity with paint to gradually change its trajectory.


Nuclear Detonation: Declared a last resort, nuclear explosions near the asteroid would change its trajectory through vaporization-based energy release. However, this method is fraught with geopolitical and scientific concerns.


Lasers: Laser beams could also be an option to vaporize asteroid matter and induce movement, though these techniques are less established.


If all defenses fail, plans remain for mitigating the effects, given the extended lead time prior to a predicted impact, allowing preparation for scenarios such as evacuation if necessary.

Comparisons with previous near-Earth objects, such as the asteroid Apophis, which had a lower but then concerning impact level under the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, guide scientists in monitoring YR4. Apophis had a significant reevaluation of impact predictions thanks to updated measurements—a befitting parallel strategy now employed for YR4.


2024 YR4, significantly smaller than Apophis, presents a localized threat rather than a planetary-scale hazard, and it is being closely observed from terrestrial and space telescopes to refine impact predictions.
